What do architects do and what kind of degree do they need? what is the average salary?

My brother loves designing homes on CAD programs and other software. He has a bachelors degree in an unrelated field. What kind of Masters degree should he look into? What schools specialize in it? Do they typically work from home or an office? How much do they make, starting out and 10 years in?

Answer:
To become a licensed architect, you need to obtain the right education and work experience, as well as a passing grade on professional examinations. Most complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture. Bachelor’s degree programs take about 4 years to complete. Master’s degrees usually take 1 to 3 years.

The prerequisites for architecture programs vary depending on where you apply. Some schools require a bachelor’s degree for entry, while others accept applicants straight from high school. Typical programs include courses in subjects such as math, architectural history and theory, construction methods, and building design. Most programs also provide hands-on design experience.

Shorter master’s degree programs are often available only to students with a bachelor’s degree in architecture or a closely-related subject. Programs that take longer to complete are often open to people with degrees in any subject, as long as they have completed courses in certain prerequisite subject areas.

You can also become an architect by enrolling in an apprenticeship-style program with the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). This involves approximately 10 years of courses and hands-on work experience.
